Shanty Hogan Golf Tournament Benefits PC Football Program

Phoenix College alumni, employees, and corporate partners came together for fun in the sun at the 6th Annual Shanty Hogan Golf Tournament on June 4, 2010 at The Legacy Golf Resort. The event, which raised nearly $8,000 for the PC football program, marked the legacy of legendary football coach, golf coach, and athletic director Thomas "Shanty" Hogan, who spent more than two decades as one of PC's most celebrated coaches. A highlight of the event was hearing from two of our PC Bears football players during the luncheon, Alonzo Highsmith and Joe Jajoc, who shared with the audience their excitement over being part of the PC football tradition, and an appearance by former Governor Rose Mofford. Congratulations to the winning team which consisted of Gaines DuVall, Joe Collins, Chuck Moller and Anthony Simeonov.

Many thanks to our sponsors and donors for making the event possible as well as the Golf Tournament Planning Committee, including Kathy Hogan Harris, Craig Liston, Dr. Bill Wright, Coach Land Jacobsen and Frank Luna. Special thanks also to Ron Wolfley of the Arizona Cardinals.

About Shanty Hogan and the PC Football Team
The Shanty Hogan Golf Tournament is named in honor of Phoenix College’s late legendary coach Thomas “Shanty” Hogan. The golf tournament is an effort to support the football program at PC through the Shanty Hogan Legacy Fund established in 2007.

Coach Hogan is famously known as the most successful football and golf coach in the history of Phoenix College. In 1964, Shanty led the football team to a winning title when the PC Bears were named National Champions of the prestigious Shrine Bowl. Over the years, the titles and accolades continued to build for Shanty, including being named to the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.

Coach Land Jacobsen and his coaching staff have returned the Phoenix College Football program to national prominence. With a bowl game and a national ranking in Coach Jacobsen’s first year, there is much anticipation as the Bears strive to build on their success.

________________________________________

Tennis fans around the world know John McEnroe as one of the most successful and high-profile players in the history of the game. For the Love of Art teams McEnroe with his friend Eric Fischl, one of the world’s top contemporary artists, to help raise funds to benefit the Phoenix College Eric Fischl Scholars Program and the John and Patty McEnroe Foundation.
Fischl’s work has been featured in galleries, museums, and private collections around the globe. An alumnus of Phoenix College, he celebrates his connection to the college by returning annually to present the Eric Fischl Lecture Series. Each year, he brings along a friend to highlight the annual Phoenix Art Museum event, presented as part of the Contemporary Forum series. McEnroe will be the featured speaker this year. Those who think they “know” McEnroe may not be aware of the existence of The John McEnroe Gallery in New York City’s Soho area, where he collects and trades art and showcases the work of contemporary artists. McEnroe’s presentation is entitled We Can Be Serious, a riff on the title of his best-selling autobiography, You Cannot Be Serious.

In conjunction with the lecture, Fischl will present the prestigious Vanguard Award to two Phoenix College students competing in the college’s 2010 student art competition, which will be exhibited in Phoenix Art Museum’s Great Hall prior to the lecture. Each student selected for the Vanguard Award receives a $2,500 cash prize. Fischl will also celebrate the Eric Fischl Scholars Program, which recruits students to study fine art at Phoenix College and is the first program of its kind among community colleges.

For the Love of Art is sponsored through a partnership between Lennar, Village Health Clubs & Spas, Phoenix College, Phoenix Art Museum’s Contemporary Forum, Londen Companies, Systems Solutions Inc., Climatec, Phoenix Motor Company and Dr. Abbus Fazel DDS.
